Soundproof a party wall advice - please!
I've posted stuff on here before about my slightly nutty neighbour (the one who put up a fence to block out our conservatory window as our cat was looking into her kitchen and 'intimidating' her)

Well another issue we have is that we have paper thin walls between us with nothing filling the cavity. This means you can hear a ridiculous amount of noise through the walls - some if it unavoidable. You can hear plug/light switches being turned on and off and plugs going in and out of sockets and they seem louder than if we were doing it ourselves. You can also hear her sneezing and, though she lives alone, when she has guests you can hear her conversations, though normally only the male voices are clear. She's currently having some building work done and I've just been treated to half an hour of a clap talking about plastering work for tomorrow. (Which was a refreshing change from the drilling and sawing that was going on at 9pm for the last 3 nights)

We have a 3 year old and a one month old - she must be able to hear them constantly. I don't really care in many respects, the whole situation us just pudding us off now - I suppose the more you hear, the more sensitised you become to it. I had a 45 minute conversation with he'd asking her to turn her tv down and particularly the bass as Christmas Eve you could hear skyfall out in the pavement and normally it's like having a boy racer parked outside as you get that horrible lie pitch baddy reverb which, once you hear it, is impossible to ignore. She refused on the grounds that she is not a 'noisy neighbour' and I know full well that the noise isn't enough for the council to care as I used to have a lot of involvement in asb and public protection in my job.

So do any of you have any knowledge/expertise/experience in sound proofing walls? Do you have to do different things depending on the type of noise? Can filling the cavity do anything to help? I live just outside bristol if anyone knows a company!

Any help gratefully received

Ha ha ha!!! Didn't bother reading any further than that as I reckon it would have spoiled that gem of an opening para.

I don't get wound up about refereeing against England being shit anymore. It's standard in every match, just because everyone hates us. Pathetic.

sniper, just in case you dont know, here's how to tell if you have a cavity wall or not.

If you do, it'll be a relatively easy fix. If not, its a pain in the arse and you'll have to lose some space in your house for soundproofing.

Sniper,
I reckon the only way out of this is to move.
I've been in a similar situation where every noise escalates.put it down to experience.
Good luck.

Re: Soundproof a party wall advice - please!
Presumably your talking a relatively new build house.

Stud out the walls in question using 2x4inch timber and fill with jablite:

http://www.diy.com/departments/jablite-insulation-board-w450mm-l12m-t50mm-pack-of-4/26831_BQ.prd?gclid=CPGFuZirzsMCFdHMtAod3gsA5g&ecamp=SEAPLA26831_BQ&ef_id=U0MgsQAABXL6w@A4:20150206221116:s

Any electrics will have to be pulled it, which if there is no give in the cables could be an issue.

Then cover in plaster board and get those walls plastered

You'll be losing about 3inches of space in each room.

If you do the studding and get a pro in to do the plastering, reckon your talking about £150 a room (i.e. for only those walls that are attached to her property).

HTH.

And if you do go down this route, sorry, don't actually go to sodding b and q - get insulation online elsewhere
